Private adviser or a platform? Choosing support for training contract and banking applications

Most candidates do not need a private adviser. This page sets out when they do.

Families and candidates targeting Magic Circle and US law firms, investment banks and private equity usually choose between three kinds of support: free university careers services and employer resources, online platforms and communities with courses, forums and application databases, and one-to-one private advisers. Each suits a different situation. This page sets out when each is the right choice, including when Elite Careers Strategy (ECS) is not.

When free and platform support is enough

For most candidates, it is. University careers services, employer events and published application guidance cover the basics well. Online platforms add structured courses, practice tests, forums and examples of successful applications, at a low monthly cost. If a candidate is organised, getting interviews at a reasonable rate and wants practice and information rather than judgement on their specific case, a platform is usually the better value.

When a private adviser is worth considering

One-to-one private advice tends to make sense in narrower situations:

  • A strong candidate on paper whose applications are not turning into interviews, or whose interviews are not turning into offers, and who cannot see why.
  • A full recruitment cycle where firm selection, direct training contract versus vacation scheme strategy, written applications, the Watson Glaser test, video interviews and assessment centres all need to be sequenced against live deadlines.
  • An international candidate or family unfamiliar with how London firms recruit.
  • A parent or sponsor who wants one accountable adviser and a written plan, rather than a set of resources.

What ECS is, and is not

ECS is founder-led private advisory for families and candidates targeting the most selective careers in law, finance, private capital and consulting. Every engagement begins with a Private Diagnostic and is led personally by Hassan Akram. ECS is not a course, a cohort or a package of hours. ECS deliberately limits the number of families it works with each year, and engagements are by application only.

ECS does not guarantee offers. Employers make hiring decisions. What ECS documents is its record: 106 documented outcomes and selection progressions across 53 candidate journeys, with the method explained at /how-we-count-outcomes.

Questions to ask any adviser

  • Who will actually do the work, and will it be the same person throughout?
  • What evidence of outcomes do you hold, and how do you count it?
  • Do you distinguish outcomes from paid engagements and outcomes from free content?
  • What happens if progress stalls?
  • Do you promise results? (A credible adviser will not.)
